7 Marriage Building Prayers

Scripture teaches us, in James 5.16, "The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." How might this powerful spiritual weapon be used to build your marriage?

Recently, I read a statement by Dietrich Bonhoeffer on prayer that resonated so deeply with me:

"If we are to pray aright, perhaps it is quite necessary that we pray contrary to our own heart. Not what we want to pray is important, but what God wants us to pray.… The richness of the Word of God ought to determine our prayer, not the poverty of our heart." (Packiam, Discover the Mystery of Faith: How Worship Shapes Believing)

When we approach prayer (in general, and how much more regarding our own marriages) and begin with what is in our hearts, how often will we be tempted to focus our energies and efforts on our own kingdoms coming?

But when we start with the riches of the Word of God, and let that shape, motivate and inform our prayer life, we begin to unleash the resources of Heaven over our marriages.

1. Ephesians 3.14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you (insert your name and your spouse's name here) to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your (insert your name and your spouse's name here) hearts through faith—that you (insert "we"), being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you (insert "we") may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church (insert "and in our marriage" and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. 3. Colossians 1.9-12 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you (insert your name and your spouses name) may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 (insert "that we would") so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, (insert "that we would") fully pleasing to him: (insert "that we would") bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 (insert "that we would") being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

4. Philippians 1.9 And it is my prayer that your (insert your name and your spouses name) love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you (insert your name and your spouses name) may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
