Why I Do College Ministry

When I was a Freshman in college, I knew about Jesus. He was the guy I had heard of in the bible that did a lot of amazing things. To me He was the guy who multiplied fish and bread, raised someone from the dead, and parted the sea while everyone was running away from Egypt. I later found out that last one was Moses, but anyways you get the point. I knew a lot of the stories, but I didn't know THE STORY.

One night I was walking home from the student center and heard a group of people in the dark near my dorm singing a song. They were singing one phrase over and over and over again.

He loves us,
Oh how He loves us
Oh how He loves us
Oh how He loves.
— John Mark McMillan (and the Bible)

It will take my whole life to explain how meaningful this moment was for me. Besides how repetitive the song was, I was caught up in this love song that didn't hinge upon my own affections or feelings, but upon the affection of God for me. I had always thought the church and the bible were meant to change and stir my affections toward God, and that was one of my reasons for never really getting involved. But the true reality is that they were always meant to reveal His love.

The Kingdom came down in the light of love.
And His is a love that loves too much.
— Curt Vernon

I joined a bible study, I learned of His affections, and I was slowly yet instantly and infinitely undone. Undone and recreated and redeemed by how He has loved me. I started to hear Him declaring my sonship over me and despite of me. I started believing what I was hearing and what I was reading and what I was seeing. And to this day, I'm still sinning and I'm still growing and I'm still finding I know nothing of His love because I will never reach it's end.

So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
— 1 John 4:16

This is why I do college ministry. The God who created me for His glory abides in me because He wills to. He saw me on that night in the darkness and sang His song into my life. The song of His love. Forget whatever else you have heard: He loves us. This is the song that never ends.  And now I take every chance I can to worship with my students in public, so those who pass by in the dark might hear the song they've never truly heard.
